YourNet Dedicated Servers / Colocation FAQ's
- What exactly is a Dedicated Server?
A Dedicated Server simply means a server that is used solely by your business, no aspect of it is shared with another user at anytime. You have
complete access/control over every part of the server. Use it for any function, install any program on it, it's all up to you. More often than not,
businesses find it more cost effective to simply rent a dedicated server and house it at an offsite data center than managing it completely in-house.
That's where YourNet comes in. We custom design a server to fit your businesses' needs and then install it in our secure Schaumburg Datacenter giving you
the benefits of every industry standard: DS3 connectivity, key card access to the data center, 24/7 camera surveillance, 24/7-365 on-hand server
technicians, redundant power supplies, temperature control monitoring, and a Cisco Systems backbone.
To those of you not fluent in "tech talk" that simply means that YourNet provides a top of the line server, manages it's installation
and maintenance, and provides you complete access to it for any business function you require.
- What is a Colocated Server?
A Colocated server enjoys all the same benefits as a dedicated server, except the server is actually owned by the customer instead of
provided by YourNet and rented out to the customer. The word "Colocated" comes in because the customer-owned server becomes
housed at YourNet's facility to benefit from all of our great Datacenter features, the convenience of a centralized Chicago location, as well as having YourNet take over maintenance and
upkeep of the physical server.
- What can I do with a Dedicated or Colocated Server?
Since the server is completely yours, any of the following functions can be employed:
- Install anything you want
- Complete root access to the entire machine / file system
- Host E-Commerce websites
- Custom application development & hosting
- Host a Terminal Server for your employees
- Offsite data backup
- Dedicated mail server
- How is a Dedicated Server different from a YourNet Virtual Private Server?
The Dedicated Server can be thought of as the big brother of a Virtual Private Server. A VPS boasts the same great functions and performance
that a Dedicated Server can provide, but usually with lower resources (ram, disk space) at a lower cost. A Virtual Private Server usually
maintains anywhere from 2-12 users in their own isolated virtual environments using pre-defined portions of the total CPU speed, Ram allotments,
and disk space... while a Dedicated Server is simply you on one machine using everything the machine has to offer at all times.
- Can YourNet provide on-site assistance with my Colocated or Dedicated Server?
Absolutely! Experienced YourNet server technicians are available 24-7x365 to assist in anything from swapping tapes, reboots, operating system reloads, server troubleshooting, security patches,
to log rotation... YourNet's support staff is always here to assist you.
